The results from Elia's October 2025 Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auctions are in, and the message is clear: Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have firmly established themselves as a cornerstone of Belgium's energy security.
The auctions—covering the Y-1 (2026-2027), Y-2 (2027-2028), and Y-4 (2029-2030) delivery periods—all cleared, successfully procuring the necessary capacity. But the standout story is the massive participation and success of battery storage projects across the board.
Y-4 Auction: A Surge of Investor Confidence
The most forward-looking auction, the Y-4 for the 2029-2030 period, was a major indicator of the market's direction.
An incredible 571.91 MW of derated BESS capacity was submitted (offered) into the auction, showing a massive pipeline of projects ready to be built.
The auction cleared at a high price of 74,300.00 €/MW/year, procuring a total of 4,689.57 MW.
In total, 226.58 MW of BESS capacity (Large- and Small-scale) was selected.
We are thrilled to see major new-build projects, including Aspiravi (Harelbeke), HybriX Energy, and Ruien Energy Storage 2&3, securing long-term contracts. This success provides the stable, long-term revenue needed to finance these critical assets.
Y-2 and Y-1: BESS Secures the Near Term
This powerful trend was confirmed in the shorter-term auctions, where BESS operators and developers again secured significant volumes.
Y-2 Auction (2027-2028): A total of 219.59 MW of BESS capacity was selected. Key projects awarded contracts include:
Auvelais Energy Storage: 34.50 MW
Gramme Storage 1: 18.00 MW
Eneco: 24.10 MW
Electrabel: 91.00 MW (from two projects)
Y-1 Auction (2026-2027): This auction added another 225.75 MW of BESS capacity to the grid for the coming year. Notable selections include:
Harmignies Energy Storage: 39.00 MW
Eneco: 25.55 MW
Electrabel: 109.33 MW (from two projects)
What This Means for Belgium
The results from all three auctions are unambiguous. Battery storage is no longer a future-facing or niche technology; it is a mature, bankable, and essential pillar of the Belgian electricity system, delivering capacity today and for the decade to come.
As an aggregator at the forefront of BESS monetisation, Yuso is excited by this strong market signal. The significant volumes and multi-year contracts awarded will accelerate the energy transition, and we congratulate all the selected parties.
We look forward to working with these assets to optimize their value and ensure they deliver the flexibility and security our grid needs.
